“For the word of God is alive and powerful.” Hebrews 4:12a

Read the Word

If you have decided to follow Christ one of the most important things you need to do is get a Bible and start reading! Even if you haven't decided to follow Christ, reading a Bible is a great way to learn about the Christian faith. Whether you open a physical Bible, a Bible app, or an online Bible, it is important to be in God's Word daily as it is our primary source for teaching and equipping Christians.

An easy way to get started is to use the SOAP method. SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer. It is a way of getting more out of your time in God's word.

  • Scripture: Once you have read your daily portion of scripture go back and simply underline or make note of any verses that jump out at you with special significance.

  • Observation: Once you have done that ask yourself these questions: What was it about that scripture that caught my attention? What is the scripture saying? Take time to paraphrase and write the scripture in your own words.

  • Application: Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself - how does it apply to your life right now? Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, a promise, or a correction. How can you apply the observation so that it affects your life today?

  • Prayer: This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He wants to teach you. Remember, prayer is a two way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say!
