"The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him.” Psalm 24:1

Before we talk about what to write on a check or where to drop it off, it's far more important that you know why Christ followers are encouraged to give through their local church. Simply put, it's what God says to do in the Bible, and it's an appropriate response to who He is and all He has done. It's an expression of gratitude, obedience, and reverence...it's worship.

Why do Christians give to the local church?

As Christians, we believe that we are stewards of God's resources. He is the owner of all that we have. Throughout scripture, we are reminded of the importance of giving back a portion of what God has so generously provided.

As we honor God with our tithes and offerings, we are personally blessed by God, the church is made financially sound, and people are helped around the world. We are a church that desires to live with a Spirit of love and generosity, as Christ modeled.

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10

What are “tithes and offerings”?

Along with many other passages we read in the book of Malachi that God instructs His people to give Him the first 10%, or "first fruits", of all He gives them. These “first fruits” are often referred to as tithes. Not because He needs it, but because our hearts need to give it. What we do with what we have directs our hearts and defines our worship. Jesus says in Matthew 6:21 "Where you treasure is, there your heart will be also".

Beyond giving our tithe to the local church, God often asks us to grow in generosity by sacrificing above our tithe to meet specific needs. A few examples of this would be giving to missions, the benevolence fund to aid families in our community in crisis, or to relief efforts due to a disaster.
