Water Baptism

What is baptism?

Our church practices water baptism as an outward expression and testimony of an inward change that has taken place in your heart and life. Jesus expressed the importance of baptism in His Great Commission when He stated, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Mat. 28:19-20). While we believe that baptism doesn't "save" you, it declares that you have given your life to Jesus (Eph. 2:8-9). Water Baptism also publicly invites others to celebrate with you.

Why be baptized?

First and most importantly, Christ followers get baptized because Jesus modeled it Himself and taught that it should be done in Mark 1:9. It is an important step as we personally identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus (Col. 2:12). Baptism also marks your decision to follow Him (Acts 18:8), and connect you with a community of people who share the same commitment. For our church, it powerfully reminds us of the cause for celebration when someone gives his or her life to Christ, and the role we are called to play in helping that person grow.

What does it look like?

In Matthew 3:16 Jesus was submerged into a river by his cousin, John. Later, the first Christians were baptized as soon as they decided to dedicate their lives to following Him (Acts 18:8). They were immersed in water, symbolizing the end of their old lives, and emerged to begin their new lives as followers of Christ. The church follows the same example.
